Do not Discard Home When Injected

Written By Emdua on Jumat, 22 Juli 2011 | 03.29

For some, the specter of a hypodermic needle as much as possible avoided. If forced, they also tend to reflex to look away so as not to see the process of entry of the needle into a vein. Yet according to the study, see the process actually reduces the pain of injections.

The conclusion was based on the trial team from University College London (UCL) and University of Milan-Bicocca to know the response when the brain receives pain signals.

Experiments carried out by applying heat to the hands of 18 volunteers. Participants were able to withstand higher temperatures when looking at their hands in the mirror, than when his hand closed timber beams.

Through a convex mirror, they see the process when the hand is given a touch of heat. Witnessing the process that allows them to reduce the level of pain up to 3 degrees Celsius, compared to when they do not see the process.

This research has been published in Psychological Science, and provide new insight into how the brain processes pain signals.

"The interesting thing is the relationship between the experience of pain and the brain representation of the body," said Professor Patrick Haggard, of the UCL, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

"Our research has shown the existence of an interesting interplay between the visual brain tissue and brain tissue pain," he said.

Although the research is to see the pain that was not too severe, but it could help scientists develop new treatments for patients who experience chronic pain.

Prevent Blindness with Omega 3

Omega-3 fatty acids not only have a positive impact on heart health, but also the visual system. Essential fatty acids are proven to protect the two main drivers of blindness in humans.

As quoted My Health News Daily, the results of research conducted eye health experts from Children's Hospital Boston, Dr. Lois Smith, suggests that omega-3 helps regulate the growth of blood vessels in the eye.

That means, fatty acids can help prevent eye diseases such as retinopathy, caused by overgrowth of vessels of the eye that leak. Including age-related macular degeneration, caused by abnormal growth of blood vessels.

Fatty acids also activate proteins that increase insulin sensitivity, which benefits people with type 2 diabetes. "Though still need further clinical studies, patients can improve insulin sensitivity with omega-3 fatty acids without an increased risk of heart disease," said Smith.

Smith reveal the findings through experiments on mice. Although the experiments conducted on mice, he believes the consumption of two grams of omega 3, containing the compound docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EHA), per day gives the same benefits in humans.

Smith's research, published in the journal Nature Medicine showed that mice fed a diet rich in omega-3 has the growth of blood vessels of the eyes 50 percent more than mice that mengasup foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids.

This reinforces previous research that showed that people who love to eat foods containing omega 3, like fish, have a risk of eye disease is lower than those who rarely ate fish.

Together with researchers from the National Eye Institute, Smith is now doing tests on AREDS2, an omega 3 supplement which will be developed to help people with macular degeneration. Testing supplement the sharpness level to address the decline due to aging is continued until 2013.
